Kansai to Avoid Immediate Decommissioning of Takahama-2
On November 11, Kansai Electric Power Co. compiled a technical evaluation of its Takahama-2 (PWR, 826MWe), which will mark 40 years of operation on November 14 of next year.
The power company concluded that a safe state of cold shutdown could be maintained at Takahama-2 for the next ten years. It therefore submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) for approval of revisions to its operational safety program to that end.
In its evaluation of plant’s current cold shutdown state, the power company took into account the operational experience that had been built up and the technical developments that had occurred since the last technical aging evaluation completed in 2005, which marked its 30-year point.
The company has determined that the soundness of equipment, facilities and structures to maintain the plant’s cold shutdown could be preserved beyond 40 years by continuing current maintenance activities.
