{"id":4025,"date":"2019-05-24T07:32:34","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T06:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en-renew\/?p=4025"},"modified":"2019-05-31T11:29:41","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T10:29:41","slug":"japanese-power-companies-to-cooperate-with-each-other-to-complete-anti-terrorism-facilities-more-quickly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en\/news\/4025","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Power Companies to Cooperate with Each Other to Complete Anti-terrorism Facilities More Quickly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The move was made in response to a statement by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) (refer to the <em>Atoms in Japan<\/em> article of April 24), saying that it would suspend the NPPs\u2019 operation if such facilities\u2014the work on which has fallen behind schedule\u2014are not completed by the respective deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>In reference to the NRA\u2019s rejection of a request to extend the deadlines for construction of such facilities, Katsuno said at a press conference that the power companies had \u201cinsufficiently\u201d communicated the details of their respective construction periods of the anti-terrorism facilities with the NRA, but would now endeavor to complete them \u201cas soon as possible, to the best of their ability, to minimize the suspension periods or\u2014if possible\u2014avoid them altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding that the power companies would cooperate with each other whenever and wherever they could, Katsuno mentioned, \u201cWe haven\u2019t discussed anything specific yet; that will be our task from now on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The installation of anti-terrorism facilities is required under the NRA\u2019s new regulatory standards, with the deadline being \u201cfive years from the time that each construction plan is approved.\u201d However, three of the utilities\u2014namely, the Kansai Electric Power Co. (Kansai EP), the Shikoku Electric Power Co. and the Kyushu Electric Power Co.\u2014had pointed out that they expected an additional twelve to thirty months to be needed beyond that limit for the facilities at ten of their NPPs.<\/p>\n<p>On May 16, Kyushu Electric submitted the construction plan for anti-terrorism facilities for its Genkai-3 (PWR, 1180MWe). That unit has been restarted, with the deadline for completing such facilities coming in August 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Although the company had said that it would be difficult to complete the construction before the deadline, it suddenly submitted a portion of the plan to the NRA, hoping to meet the deadline by successively starting work on each separate item one by one once it receives the individual approval for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The move was made in response to a statement by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) (refer to the Atoms in Japan article of April 24), saying that it would suspend the NPPs\u2019 operation if such facilities\u2014the work on which has fallen behind schedule\u2014are not completed by the respective deadlines.
