{"id":552,"date":"2015-03-06T00:47:11","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T00:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en\/?p=552"},"modified":"2015-03-12T05:21:56","modified_gmt":"2015-03-12T05:21:56","slug":"japans-environment-ministry-explains-actions-to-monitor-health-of-fukushima-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en\/news\/552","title":{"rendered":"Japan\u2019s Environment Ministry Explains Actions to Monitor Health of Fukushima Residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The actions were based on comments made by the public about an interim report issued in December 2014 by the ministry\u2019s expert panel on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry will follow through on four items pointed out in the report, as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Continuing efforts to understand and evaluate exposure doses in the early period after the accident.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding changes in residents suffering from diseases in Fukushima Prefecture and neighboring prefectures.<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing investigations of residents\u2019 health checks, focusing on thyroid check-ups.<\/li>\n<li>Continuing and enhancing the risk communication project.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A report by experts of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) forecasts a low risk of cancer stemming from exposure to radioactive materials discharged in the Fukushima Daiichi accident.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the ministry will reinforce the support it gives to Fukushima Prefecture from the viewpoint of ensuring that residents continue to feel confident.<\/p>\n<p>To enhance risk communication, the ministry will develop human resources to engage in related projects.
