He then acknowledged that the FSM is no longer as fearful or concerned as it had stated at the United Nations General Assembly, and that such transparent briefings and discussions have substantially increased the FSM\u2019s trust in Japan\u2019s intentions and Japan\u2019s technological capabilities to \u201cnot harm our shared oceanic assets and resources.\u201d He thus highly praised Japan\u2019s efforts to facilitate understanding on the ALPS-treated water among the people of the FSM.<\/p>\n<p>At the 9th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM9), held by videoconference on July 2, 2021, and attended by leaders of Japan and 18 Oceanic countries and regions, then-Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide explained that the discharge of the ALPS-treated water would be conducted in compliance with regulatory requirements and international standards, and that Japan would continue to provide explanations based on scientific evidence in close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).<\/p>\n<p>As a recent example, ALPS-treated water was discussed at a summit meeting in September 2022 between Japan and the Pacific island nation of the Republic of Palau. That country\u2019s President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. welcomed Japan\u2019s intention to continue close dialogue and the\u00a0explanations provided by Prime Minister Kishida.<\/p>\n<p>On January 13, a meeting of relevant Japanese Cabinet ministers indicated that the actual release of water was expected to start sometime in the coming spring or summer. The government continues to strategically disseminate information in cooperation with related ministries and agencies to the international community on the characterization and source term of the water, and its safety.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) staged a videoconference briefing on January 30 for diplomatic missions and others in Tokyo regarding the handling of the ALPS-treated water.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last year, the Ministry, entering into a partnership with <em>euronews<\/em> (a European television news network, headquartered in France), also produced <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u29RhZjX_8M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a short explanatory program<\/a> incorporating interviews with experts and specialists, as well as with people in Fukushima.
