{"id":6835,"date":"2023-12-15T13:47:07","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T04:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en\/?p=6835"},"modified":"2023-12-22T16:00:33","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T07:00:33","slug":"cop28-sapporo-5-leaders-to-invest-4-2-billion-to-create-new-uranium-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/en\/news\/6835","title":{"rendered":"COP28: Sapporo 5 Leaders to Invest $4.2 Billion to Create New Uranium Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The announcement was hurriedly made at the first Net Zero Nuclear (NZN) Summit, which was being held on the same day, and is regarded as a concrete move toward realizing the declaration made on December 2 by 22 countries<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6835_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6835_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6835_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6835_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6835_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6835_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">As of today, Armenia, Croatia, and Jamaica joined the communiqu\u00e9, bringing the total to 25 countries.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6835_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6835_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> to triple the world\u2019s installed nuclear capacity by the year 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The sum of USD4.2 billion will be invested over the next three years to expand uranium enrichment and conversion capacity and create a new fuel market not influenced by Russia, which now maintains a large share of the global nuclear fuel market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNuclear power is the only way to achieve net-zero global carbon emissions and the 1.5\u00b0C target by 2050,\u201d said Dr. Kathryn Huff, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), who led the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>A<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jaif.or.jp\/cms_admin\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/JointIndustryStatementCOP28_EN\">joint statement<\/a> <\/span><\/span>concerning the investment was issued by the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF), the U.S. Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the nucleareurope, the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), and the UK Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), welcoming their governments\u2019 stance on building a new nuclear fuel supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that a stable fuel supply not only improves decarbonization and energy security but also enhances national security, the statement stressed that \u201cwhile government support such as this is essential to expand industry supply capacity, the private sector and financial institutions must also make investments so that further progress can be made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia currently controls almost half of the global uranium enrichment and conversion market, and it is said that about one-fifth of the fuel used in U.S. nuclear power plants (NPPs) comes from Russia, which has been strengthening its dominance in the global market by supplying nuclear fuel at low prices. In particular, it has been the sole supplier of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6835_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6835_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6835_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6835_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6835_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6835_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Low-enriched uranium with an enrichment level of 5-20% of U235.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6835_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6835_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>, which is to be loaded in many of the advanced reactors expected to be introduced on a global scale in the future, including in emerging countries.<\/p>\n<p>To break that monopoly, Centrus Energy Corp. (formerly USEC), a uranium enrichment firm in the United States, began producing HALEU fuel in Piketon, Ohio, in October 2023. The facility is the first new U.S.-owned, U.S.-technology uranium enrichment plant to begin production since 1954.
