A literature survey is the first stage of the repository site selection process and involves a desk-based review of existing literature and data on the geology of the area. During the survey period, which is expected to last around two years, the central government provides grants of up to JPY 2 billion. No radioactive waste is brought into the area during the survey.<\/p>\n
According to the government\u2019s written request, METI\u2019s 2017 Nationwide Map of Scientific Features indicates that Hitachiomiya includes areas with a relatively high likelihood of having characteristics suitable for the construction of a final disposal facility, as well as undeveloped land that could potentially accommodate a repository for HLW and other radioactive waste.<\/p>\n
ANRE also consulted the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO) on the feasibility of conducting a literature survey in the city and received a positive response. The government said its decision to make the request also took into account calls from a group of local residents for such a survey.<\/p>\n
Hitachiomiya Mayor SUZUKI Sadayuki issued a statement saying, \u201cFrom the perspective of promoting responsible community development for future generations, I have been gathering information on surveys related to final disposal, taking into consideration the possibility that they could represent one of the options available to us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cI believe that conducting a literature survey to determine whether this area is suitable and obtaining information on the suitability of its underground environment could be the first step toward beginning discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Literature surveys are currently being conducted or considered in four municipalities: Suttsu Town and Kamoenai Village in Hokkaido, Genkai Town in Saga Prefecture, and Minamitorishima Island, which is administratively part of Ogasawara Village, Tokyo. The surveys in Suttsu and Kamoenai have already been completed, and their reports have been published.<\/p>\n
