Steam generators are key components of pressurised water reactors (PWRs), transferring heat from the primary coolant circuit to the secondary circuit to produce steam for driving turbines. Each SG contains approximately 4,500 heat transfer tubes made of corrosion-resistant Alloy 690TT within a low-alloy steel pressure vessel. The units measure approximately 21 metres in height and weigh around 330 tonnes each.<\/p>\n
MHI has received orders from EDF for a total of nine replacement SGs. The company is continuing production of the remaining six units, which are scheduled for delivery from 2028 onwards.<\/p>\n
The three SGs delivered this time are designed for approximately 900 MWe-class PWRs and will be installed at Cruas Unit 2 (PWR, 956 MWe). MHI and France’s Onet Technologies jointly secured the contract following an international tender in 2019.<\/p>\n
EDF is progressively replacing steam generators at its French nuclear power plants that began operation in the 1980s, as part of efforts to support continued operation beyond 40 years.<\/p>\n
Since 2005, MHI has delivered a cumulative total of 18 replacement steam generators to EDF, including the three units in this latest shipment.<\/p>\n
