Argentina, Morocco, Romania, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States have already joined. For the convention to become effective, the combined reactor thermal output of the nations that have joined must total more than 400,000 MWt. Japan’s participation will satisfy the requirement. Prior to that, however, Japan will have to make the existing Act on Compensation for Nuclear Damage consistent with the CSC, and the following bills were approved on November 21:

  • A bill regarding subsidies, etc., for the nuclear damage compensation fund, after implementation of the CSC
  • A bill to partially revise the Act on Compensation for Nuclear Damage and the Act on Contracts for Indemnification of Nuclear Damage Compensation
