A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan at 4:27 p.m. on 28 July. The earthquake, with a focal depth of 16 km, registered a maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) scale in Uki City and Hikawa Town in Kumamoto Prefecture. Seismic intensity Upper 6 was recorded in Kumamoto City, while Upper 5 was observed in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. More than 150 aftershocks have been recorded as of the time of writing.

According to Kyushu Electric Power Co., no abnormalities have been detected at Genkai Units 3 and 4 (PWRs, 1,180 MWe each) in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and at Sendai Units 1 and 2 (PWRs, 890 MWe each) in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Three of the four units continue to operate normally, while Genkai Unit 3 remains offline for scheduled maintenance.

Shikoku Electric Power Co. also reported no abnormalities at Ikata Unit 3 (PWR, 890 MWe) in Ikata Town, Ehime Prefecture. The unit continues normal operation.
